This is the website for the preparatory study on eco-design requirements for room air conditioning appliances (air conditioners and ventilation) to prepare the implementation of the EuP Directive 2005/32/EC.

This preparatory study is intended to consider whether and which eco-design requirements should be set for air-conditioners, and the potential scale of the total environmental impact across Europe. It will provide the European Commission with the necessary information to prepare for the next phases, which are impact assessment, the consultation of the Eco-design Forum, and possible draft implementing measures.

In particular, the study will identify:

• Market characteristics for air conditioners in Europe
• Existing relevant legislation in and outside Europe
• Self regulation by industry and standards
• Needs for standards to be developed
• Relevant environmental aspects of air conditioners and their technical/economical potential for improvement over the whole life time (production – disposal)

The study seeks active participation from stakeholders willing to contribute by, for example, providing information and constructive comment. This can be done through the project website and/or participation in stakeholder meetings.

This web site is a communication tool intended to enable the stakeholders:

• to follow the progress of the study,
• to participate in the developments or
• to make comments on the pieces of work already done.

Information on this website will be regularly updated with the significant developments of the study.
